Gypsy-jazz guitarist Raul Reynoso takes a refreshing approach in that it's not the typical "Watch me play," but rather, "Here's some music I would like to share."
The gorgeous music he shares ranks him among the finest interpreters of the Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz movement, with his bright tone, effortless picking, and impeccable timing.
Whereas this genre stays close to Reinhardt as much as possible, Reynoso doesn't quote Reinhardt's solos verbatim. Likewise, the usual sparse arrangements are more fully developed with violinist Johnny Frigo and clarinetist Bob Reitmeier, who either stay in unison with Reynoso or take the lead with breathtaking and innovative solos.
Reynoso includes a little New Orleans swing ("Blues for Dixie,") that shows how significant this influence was incorporated by the European Gypsy jazz movement of the 30s. On "Sambali", Reynoso displays a Latin influence from Argentine guitarist Oscar Aleman.
A brilliant record.
